Half-moon Shaped (반달모양)
Nami Island is a half-moon shaped (반달모양) island located in Chuncheon (춘천), Gangwon Provinve (강원도) . It was originally a barren island that was formed as a result of the construction of the Cheongpyeong Dam (쳥평담) in 1943. Luckily, Suh Jae Bong, a supporter of Korean Art and Culture bought it and started a tree plantation.
General Nami (남이 장군)
Its name originates from General Nami (남이 장군) who died at the age of 28 after being falsely accused during the reign of King Sejo, the seventh king of Joseon Dynasty (조선).
Although his grave was not discovered, there were a pile of stones where his body was supposed to be buried. It was believed that if someone took a stone, it would bring misfortune to their house.
Naminara Republic (나미나라 공화국)
To help boost tourism, Nami Island (나미섬) declared itself a republic state and the island now has it’s own passports (여권), currency (화폐) and national flag (국기)! When you arrive, you’ll notice that there is an immigration counter. Don’t worry you don’t actually need your passport!
